Sydney has The Grounds of Alexandria, London has Sketch and The Ivy in Chelsea, Zagreb has Caffe Bar Finjak. What I mean by using the word “has” as the operative word for each of these cities, are photogenic cafes that are deemed instagrammable and frequented by the well-heeled. Basically the go-to for fashionistas, social media stars and those ‘in the know‘ of where to go, be seen and photographed.
Caffe Bar Finjak isn’t new to the wine bar and cafe scene in Zagreb, it’s name has several years of successful trade behind it but recently opened up an extension to their already established cafe that is picturesque and blogger-friendly. Founded by the Svirac family who combined their love for antiques and hospitality under one roof, Caffe Bar Finjak provides the perfect balance between cool and chic, in a ambience that is causal and unpretentious. No one nails antiques quite like the Svirac’s and Caffe Bar Finjak is all about art-deco interiors that have been imported as far as Spain, making guests feel right at home.. a fancy home.

The cafe is provided coffee beans from ElisCafe, Croatia’s first specialty coffee bar and winner of best coffee in the region many years running. For those visiting on an empty stomach, ham and cheese melted sandwiches are available on request. For others looking to satisfy their sweet tooth, a fresh cheese cake drizzled lightly with chocolate sauce and pomegranate perfectly compliments any refreshment.
While Caffe Bar Finjak has been getting a lot of press lately and given it’s existing popularity in Zagreb, you’ll find it busiest during lunch hours on a bright sunny day and buzzing in the evenings as regulars and newcomers sip their tea or glasses of wine at candle-lit round marble tables.

“My friend and I had a hot chocolate here which was yummy. The young waiter was excellent and we loved the ambiance & the pale pink cushions. I usually don’t like old stuff, but here it is really nice. Expect loads of people.” 150Luxury, TripAdvisor
Caffe Bar Finjak is easy to miss on your first visit. It’s located in the courtyard of an overpass, easily accessible off Vlaška ulica and across the road from one of Zagreb’s most enviable neighbourhoods. The courtyard calls home to unconventional businesses such as Sol i Papar, international food market Pekinska Patka, and Iggy Concept Store. Vlaška 78 can easily be confirmed as the local hangout for many living in this district of Zagreb but is never shy of the tourist who has done their research online on websites such as TripAdvisor.
In English, “Finjak” means finer things in life and if the cafe’s clientele is anything to go by, the Svirac family have certainly hit the nail on the head. Regulars such as Founder of Femina.hr, Zora Bjelousov, The Editor’s of Miss7, Social Media Stars such as Ljupka Tanevska, Donna Lugonja Petkovic, Lucija Kontic, MashinTheBeauty and Paul Sik have all been spotted in the cafe. Robert Sever’s AW17 Campaign was also shot in the newly openly part of Finjak.
Believe the hype, the best way to start your day or unwind after a crazy one is at Caffe Bar Finjak in Zagreb. I highly recommend the hot chocolate here, but if you like your americano without being asked if you’d like a dash of milk (seriously Croatia, wtf?), this is also a personal recommendation.
