Towering over Osijek’s city sky line you’ll notice Hotel Osijek. It’s prime location on the foot of the Drava River, a quiet river that flows by a bustling promenade filled with cafes and ice-cream bars make it the ideal place for a city break or hold an impressive business meeting. While most people wouldn’t really consider a weekend away in Osijek, I’d argue that it’s the perfect way to unwind and escape the cities usually considered tourist traps.

I was able to spend two nights at Hotel Osijek, here are my thoughts..

As my fiancé and I entered through the glass sliding doors, we were immediately greeted by the concierge, “Dobar Dan” (Good Day) within a few steps of entering. This may not seem like anything special but in a country like Croatia where great customer service is not top priority for many businesses, it goes a long way in a visible way such as this instance. Each time we passed the concierge to either leave or as we returned to the hotel we were greeted by a member of staff at the desk. Even the  hotel maids said hello, it kind of reminded me of my stay at Hotel Arts in Barcelona. The friendly concierge are also able to organise excursions to the countryside, something I recommend while  staying in Osijek as the city is quite small and can be experienced over one day.

THE ROOM ・ Deluxe Room

My love for space increases as I get older, whether it’s the place I call home or am staying in overnight, space for me is essential for a comfortable stay. I had the privilege of staying in the Deluxe Room at Hotel Osijek that had more than enough space for two people. The room comprised of, a large enough wardrobe  over-packers like myself appreciate dearly, a full length selfie mirror, a lounge area with leather couches in a common area, executive desk made from mahogany wood (#DeskGoals), large LCD screen TV, queen size bed and oversized bathroom. A fully packed mini bar also comes with the room and the room service menu has a great selection of meals to suit whatever mood you’re in. I opted for the chicken salad and octopus salad over the course of two days. All room service arrives within 20 minutes.

The hotel overlooks the two main focus points of the city, Baranja county and the Co-Cathedral. I was fortunate to stay on the side with views of the Co-Cathedral but still enjoyed the other side while spending time in the Wellness Centre.

Hotel Osijek has it’s own restaurant on the ground floor called Zimska Luka currently offering a great selection of Croatian food and international specialities. The room service and restaurant menu are basically the same. We had dinner at Zimska Luka on the first night and shared an octopus salad as starter and I did very well by selecting the grilled sea bass, while my partner had the pancetta and truffle pasta.

A continental breakfast, hot and cold buffet with a wide selection of pastries, cheeses, hams, fruits and cereals. Breakfast is included in the price.

Lately I’ve been more interested in wellness centres. I was never one to burn a few hours away in a sauna or in a spa but considering I’m about to marry a dalmo and everything he’s taught me revolves around living “po malo” meaning, “slowly, take your time,” I’ve started to pause more often and smell the rose gardens in life.

Hotel Osijek offers a wellness centre on the 14th floor, free to use for all guests of the hotel. There’s a steam room, sauna and spa overlooking the brown and green hues of Baranja county, the Drava River and the city’s iconic bridge. There is also a gym that oversees the other side of the city but it only has a small variety of equipment to use along with weights and a few yoga mats.

Everything. Literally everything there is to see and experience in Osijek is within walking distance. Take a stroll down the river towards Tvrda, the Old Town city of Osijek, dating back to the late 1600s. Both the Museum of Slavonia and Archaeological Museum are also located in Tvrda in Osijek, alongside many trendy bars, clubs and restaurants.  Osijek’s main square is a couple of streets away from the hotel along with the Co-Cathedral. Osijek’s main shopping centres, Portanova and Avenue Mall are less than 7 mins away by car or tram.

Hotel Osijek offers a great “City Break” deal over the weekend period for 495kn(67€) per person. Additional meal supplement is also available for an extra 100kn per person per meal.
