Finally, something new and exciting in the restaurant industry to emerge in Osijek, Croatia!
Had enough cevapi from Makedonka? The jumbo pizza not doing it for you anymore at Rustika? Or are you tired of the views (and food) at Hotel Osijek? Located in the heart of Osijek city, American Bar Dollar is a new and exciting concept executed unlike any other in Croatia’s fourth largest city. I was even surprised to see their Social Media up to scratch.
Adding to their success, Gastro.hr, listed American Bar Dollar as the best burger in Croatia in their ‘Top 10 Best Burgers in Croatia‘ investigative post. Not a bad start for this new restaurant in Osijek. Over to TripAdvisor and the vibe was much similar with all reviews positive and many comments on the great service and atmosphere. American Bar Dollar also has an impressive selection of international beers and is essentially the one stop shop for all your culinary desires.
American Bar Dollar are the best burgers in town and they aren’t afraid to flaunt it![/blockquote]
Moving onto my experience there with my family, I’m going to admit that I unfortunately didn’t order a burger because I was over eating heavy food. However, I was more than thrilled to find a place in Osijek with a smoked salmon salad on the menu. In fact, I was excited by the fact a restaurant actually had a salad as a main meal to begin with and not a side dish. My smoked salmon salad arrived with Greek yogurt on top. Thinking that the Greek yogurt may come in a small plate on the side for me to add to my salad at my own disposal, I ordered feta cheese as an extra. In my opinion, everything was a little too salty.
My sister and her fiancé ordered a tomato-onion feta cheese salad each and were a lot happier with their choice than I was. I probably should have stuck to the itinerary and ordered a burger or a wrap.
American Bar Dollar is known for it’s burgers and my cousins were a little wiser with their lunch choices. Burgers here range from 22-45 kuna (£2-5) and it’s a small price to pay considering you’d never be able to buy a burger for that price in London.
After a brief conversation with our waiter, who didn’t seem to enthusiastic about anything on the dessert menu, we decided to test and compare the apple crumble and cheesecake to our experience at Pop’s Burger in Ljubljana (Rated Number 1 out of 396 places on TripAdvisor). The apple crumble and cheesecake lacked the freshness and authenticity readily available in Slavonia.
While the burgers may be flaunt-able at American Bar Dollar in Osijek, the restaurant has a long way to go in delivering delectable plates of dessert. Surely this can’t be a difficult thing to nail in Croatia, especially when you’ve got it half-right already.
My advice is to save your money and walk over to Petar Pan, less than 5 minutes away.
Price between 4 people- 225 Kuna (approx. 25£)
I’m pretty sure that’s what my bill comes to each time I order from Chosen Bun in Fulham, for myself only.
